Helaine W. Marshall, professor of education and director of language education programs at Long Island University-Hudson, has over 40 years of experience in TESOL. Her work focuses on culturally responsive approaches for students new to formal educational contexts and the hidden agenda of schooling. She developed the Mutually Adaptive Learning Paradigm (MALP) while working in Green Bay, Wisconsin with Hmong refugees and, with her co-author, Andrea DeCapua, has published widely on Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education.
